An automatic transmission, also called auto, self-shifting transmission, n-speed automatic (where n is its number of forward gear ratios), or AT, is a type of motor vehicle transmission that can automatically change gear ratios as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. Like other transmission systems on vehicles, it allows an internal combustion engine, best suited to run at a relatively high rotational speed, to provide a range of speed and torque outputs necessary for vehicular travel. The number of forward gear ratios is often expressed for manual transmissions as well (e.g., 6-speed manual).

A manual transmission, also known as a manual gearbox, stick shift, n-speed manual (where n is its number of forward gear ratios), standard, MT, or in colloquial U.S. English, a stick (for vehicles with hand-lever shifters), is a type of transmission used in motor vehicle applications. It uses a driver-operated clutch engaged and disengaged by a foot pedal (automobile) or hand lever (motorcycle), for regulating torque transfer from the engine to the transmission; and a gear selector operated by hand (automobile) or by foot (motorcycle).

A conventional 5-speed manual transmission is often the standard equipment in a base-model vehicle, while more expensive manual vehicles are usually equipped with a 6-speed transmission instead; other options include automatic transmissions such as a traditional automatic (hydraulic planetary) transmission (often a manumatic), a semi-automatic transmission, or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The number of forward gear ratios is often expressed for automatic transmissions as well (e.g., 9-speed automatic).

Pipe & Connection Fittings

A fitting is used in pipe systems to connect straight pipe or tubing sections, adapt to different sizes or shapes and for other purposes, such as regulating (or measuring) fluid flow. “Plumbing” is generally used to describe the conveyance of water, gas, or liquid waste in domestic or commercial environments; “piping” is often used to describe the high-performance (high-pressure, high-flow, high-temperature or hazardous-material) conveyance of fluids in specialized applications. “Tubing” is sometimes used for lighter-weight piping, especially that flexible enough to be supplied in coiled form.

ASME B31.4 XXXX: Power piping
The B31.3 and B31.4 codes have requirements for piping found in petroleum refineries; chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, semiconductor, and cryogenic plants, and related processing plants and terminals. These codes specify requirements for materials and components, design, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection and testing of piping. The codes are applicable to piping for all fluids, including raw, intermediate and finished chemicals; petroleum products; gas, steam, air and water; fluidized solids; refrigerants, and cryogenic fluids.

The material with which a pipe is manufactured is often the basis for choosing a pipe. Materials used for manufacturing pipes include:
Carbon (CS) and galvanized steel
Impact-tested carbon steel (ITCS)
Low-temperature carbon steel (LTCS)
Stainless steel (SS)
Malleable iron
Non-ferrous metals (includes copper, inconel, incoloy and cupronickel)
Non-metallic (includes acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and toughened glass)
Chrome-molybdenum (alloy) steel — Generally used for high-temperature service
The bodies of fittings for pipe and tubing are most often the same base material as the pipe or tubing connected: copper, steel, PVC, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) or ABS. Any material permitted by the plumbing, health, or building code (as applicable) may be used, but it must be compatible with the other materials in the system, the fluids being transported and the temperature and pressure inside (and outside) the system. Brass or bronze fittings are common in copper piping and plumbing systems. Fire hazards, earthquake resistance and other factors also influence the choice of fitting materials.

Agricultural Gearbox — Rotary Mower, Tiller and Farm Equipment Series, 30HP to 300HP

SMI has been manufacturing agricultural gearboxes since 1996 — covering rotary mower series, rotary tiller series, rice harvester series and grain transportation and storage series across a power range from 30HP to 300HP. Finished gearboxes and OEM components are supplied to agricultural equipment manufacturers and distributors in North America, Australia, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

All gearbox configurations are produced to customer drawing or specification. Standard series configurations are available, and custom ratios, shaft dimensions, mounting geometry and power ratings are offered to meet the specific requirements of each customer’s equipment design.


Product Series

Rotary Mower Gearbox Series

SMI’s rotary mower gearbox series covers the full power range from 30HP to 300HP in multiple shaft configurations — horizontal dual shaft, right-angle drive, vertical output shaft and splitter configurations. Standard input shaft is 1¾” — 20 spline (ISO 500 1000 RPM PTO) with alternative input configurations available to customer specification. Gear ratios are customisable across the series. Applications include rotary cutters, rotary slashers, rotary mowers and power dividers for tractor-mounted and self-propelled equipment.

Splitter Gearbox Series

Standard agricultural splitter gearbox series with power capacity up to 120HP. Input shaft: 1¾” — 20 spline. Gear ratio customisable to customer requirement. Used in multi-blade rotary mower configurations where a single PTO input drives multiple output shafts to separate cutting deck sections.

Rotary Tiller Gearbox Series

Gearboxes for rotary tiller and cultivator applications — designed for the high-torque, high-shock-load conditions of soil engagement. Configurations include right-angle and inline drive layouts to suit different tiller designs and tractor PTO connection geometries.

Rice Harvester Gearbox Series

Specialised gearbox configurations for rice harvester and combine harvester applications — covering threshing drum drives, cutter bar drives and grain handling transmission components. Produced to customer drawing for integration into harvester assembly lines.

Grain Transportation and Storage Series

Gearbox and drive components for grain augers, conveyors and handling equipment — covering the drive system requirements of grain storage and transportation machinery in both on-farm and commercial grain handling applications.


Manufacturing Capability

The gallery above shows SMI’s agricultural gearbox production process — from individual components through batch machining, shaft manufacture and assembly to finished gearbox units ready for despatch. Key manufacturing stages include:

  • Housing casting — gearbox housings cast in-house from grey iron and ductile iron to dimensional drawing
  • Gear cutting — spur, helical and bevel gear cutting to specified module, tooth profile and accuracy grade
  • Shaft machining — input and output shafts machined to spline profile, journal dimensions and surface finish specification
  • Heat treatment — gear and shaft components heat treated to specified surface hardness and case depth
  • Assembly — bearing fitting, gear mesh setting, seal installation and functional verification before despatch

Finished Products and Export Packaging

Finished agricultural gearboxes are inspected, labelled and packed for export in wooden cases or cartons to ocean freight standard. SMI’s export packaging has supported deliveries to agricultural equipment manufacturers and distributors in Canada, Australia, India, Poland and other markets across North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
